A unique event occurred when twins were born on various days, spanning two years, in a 15-minute window.

This rare incidence has surprised parents and doctors. Fatima Madrigal, the mother, said, “It’s truly astonishing that they are twins but have separate birth dates.”

Parents Fatima Madrigal and Robert Trujillo proudly welcomed their twins, Alfredo and Aylín, into the world. Alfredo was born at 11:45 pm on New Year’s Eve, while his sister, Aylín, debuted at midnight on New Year’s Day. In 2022, Aylín, the first infant born at Natividad Medical Center in Monterey County, weighed 5 pounds and 14 ounces, while her bigger brother Alfredo weighed 6 pounds and 1 ounce.

While twins born on different dates are relatively uncommon, the occurrence of twins born in different years is rare. Madrigal reflected on the unusual coincidence, stating, “It’s crаzy that they’re twins with different birthdays.” I was very pleased that she arrived at midnight.”

While 120,000 sets of twins are born annually in the US, more than 3% of all births, twins with different birthdays by two years are rare. The rare occasion brought excitement to both parents and the obstetrician who delivered the twins on New Year’s Eve and Day.

According to Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor and faculty member of Natividad Medical Group, this delivery was unique. She said, “This was definitely one of my most memorable deliveries. I am pleased to assist these children in their safe arrival in 2021 and 2022. A great way to start the year!”

Returning to their family home in Greenfield, Monterey County, twins Alfredo and Aylín will join their three elder siblings, a mix of girls and boys. Madrigal, a mother of three, expressed her family’s excitement in welcoming the twins, stating that her eldest son was overjoyed about becoming a big brother to a baby brother. The family’s excitement for the twins’ arrival and fresh beginnings is apparent as they embark on this wonderful adventure.
